THE RULES

ALL PLAYERS MUST BE 18+

  • Play shall be governed by the Canadian Ball Hockey Association rule-book, or unless other wise stated in this text. REFEREES DECISION IS FINAL.
  • All players must have a legible number on their jerseys and a roster submitted with player numbers defined.
  • There is ZERO TOLERANCE for body checking or hitting from behind. This will result in a major and possible match penalty & game ejection.
  • ANY FIGHTING WILL RESULT IN TOURNAMENT EJECTION.
  • Tournament will be a Round Robin with 2 points awarded for a win and 1 point for a tie. At the end of the round robin teams will be ranked by tournament points for positioning in the playoffs. In the event of any tied records, the order to determine positioning will be first off goals for, then plus/minus, then least penalty minutes. If records are still tied, then a coin toss will determine ranking.
  • Each team will be guaranteed 3 games.
  • Each Round Robin game will consist of two 25 minute running time periods, with a five minute break between periods.
  • During quarter final and semi final games, if there is a tied score after regulation time, a five minute sudden death period will be played. If it is still tied after the first five minute sudden death overtime period, a three person shoot-out will occur. If there is still a tie, then it becomes a sudden death shoot-out. All players must shoot before any player shoots a second time during shoot-outs.
  • During finals, if regulation time ends in a tie, 5 minute sudden death OT periods will continue to be played until there is a goal.
  • Minor penalties = 3 minutes
  • Major penalties = 7 minutes
  • Players with three minors in a game will be ejected. As well, their team will play short handed the rest of the game. The Cumberland Cup will be hard fought, clean hockey!
  • Referees will not tolerate ANY verbal or physical abuse, penalties or ejection is at their discretion.
  • Teams will play four aside plus a goalie. Rosters / waivers must be signed and handed in to tournament organizers prior to the teams first game. Maximum of 13 players per team. No additions can be made to the roster after it has been submitted. No exceptions!
  • No center or blue line.
  • With slap-shots, the stick cannot raise above the hip, including the follow through! An illegal slap-shot will result in change of possession. Players continuing to take illegal slap-shots may be penalized at the referees discretion.
  • Face-offs will be limited to speed up play and will only take place to start the game, after goals and after penalties. Ball will be placed between opponent’s sticks and played on a whistle blast from the official. When the ball leaves the playing area- the player to last touch/deflect the ball out of bounds will result in opposing team possession. Player will move ball from sideline where ball left the playing surface.
  • If goalie freezes ball, referee will signal the same team to take possession behind/ beside the net and player moves ball on whistle or “play” command  from the referee. In the event that two or more players freeze the ball against the fence or net, referee will signal possession to first player to touch the ball, and move on whistle.
  • In all instances where the referee signals possession, and to resume play on the whistle or “play” command, OPPOSING PLAYERS MUST GIVE AT LEAST TWO METERS to the player in possession of the ball. As well, the ball MUST BE PASSED to start play.
  • One long whistle blast will signal end of a period or game.
  • Goaltenders must move ball laterally or behind them unless moving the ball forward with goal stick.
  • Official tournament balls will be the red liquid filled hockey ball. Game balls will be supplied by the tournament.
  • No sticks with affixed plastic blades (screws attaching blades) will be allowed.
  • For your own safety, protective equipment should be worn. Shin guards, elbow/knee pads and gloves are suggested. Helmets are not allowed.
  • Goalies are required to wear full goalie gear, including face-mask.
  • Players will be required to sign a liability waiver to be eligible.
  • Complaints of players who are not eligible will be placed with tournament organizers.
  • Players will be required to show ID and be able to produce it at anytime during the tournament if requested. All players must be 18 years of age or older.
